"...quod punctum salit iam et movetur ut animal..." - Theodorus Gaza (* ca. 1400, + ca. 1475)
Welcome at the Edition Punctum Saliens! A complicated name for a small publisher, yet we intend this name to become our program. The phrase "Punctum Saliens" comes from a latin translation of a text of Aristoteles (Hist. animal 6, 3) and describes that little dot in an egg, the germ cell of life, which, in there, jumps and bounces. Thus, "Punctum Saliens" means the proverbial crucial point (lit. in German: "jumping point") as the most central, the most relevant thing. At the same time a "Punctum" is also the name of a tone, a note, like it is still being used today in the word "counterpoint". Counterpoint there means the shortform of the way of composition that poses note against note, voice against voice: Punctum contra punctum. Here at the Edition we are introducing works which probably will not enjoy the broadest interest by the public, but still have much life in themselves. Works which may still (and especially so) be the germ cell for making living music. A focal point is being laid on church music, thereby making an offer for smaller ensembles as well as smaller budgets, using small and simple settings. Another crucial point for us is the promotion of less-known composers. The stylistic spectrum, in this case, is open. Our aim is also to be a platform for historical research in any way connected to music and its history. Liturgical studies and editions are planned as well as e.g. publications about organ construction. Our motivation is to offer the best conditions possible to composers, editors and publishers, and, at the same time, keeping the final price tag low. We are going to reach this goal by low-number editions and print-on-demand, making an extensive pre-financing obsolete. Punctum Saliens is the core cell of life - at last this name is also a wish. A wish for the endeavour. And a winking of the eye. |
